The Chunk Reading Program: Why It WORKS
EVERYONE learns quickly through MULTI-SENSORY engagement and DIFFERENTIATION!
- PHOTOS and MOVEMENT help ELL and LD students, and students who struggle to stay focused.
- DECODING is taught by analogies. Four Chunk Charts with 16 rimes /chunks on each (64 total), use “helping words” and beautiful photos to help students remember the chunks.
- SPELLING is taught by highlighting, writing, and reading the chunks and letter patterns in the Leveled Word Lists. There are 5 Leveled Lists for each of the 4 Chunk Charts. Students play a game called “Match‐O” that asks them to find the box that has the “helping word” and chunk in it. A grid is provided to help students line up the chunks, see the pattern, and add the additional letters. The program also comes with a writing exercise for each of the 64 chunks so that teachers can assign focused practice for any chunks a student finds tricky to master.
- READING is taught with 25 high interest decodable stories that embed chunks from the charts. Students highlight the chunks they see in the story, as skill that transfers easily from the Match-O game.
- FLUENCY is developed through repeated and shared reading of the stories.
- COMPREHENSION is developed through story quiz question.
History of the Chunk Reading Program
The Chunk Reading Program strategy was created in 2005 by Christine Marks. Christine has been a classroom teacher for grades k, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6. In addition, she has been a Reading Recovery teacher for 10 years and a Reading Specialist for 6 years. Throughout her long teaching career, she has taught ALL varieties of struggling students. She developed the program over the years to address weaknesses she had found in available reading programs at the time. Though her students had diverse learning abilities and styles, they found great success using her strategy.
In 2012, Christine Marks partnered with Amy Fink to further develop her decoding program into a complete reading program and a product that any teacher could use. Together, Christine and Amy revised the existing program components to reflect the most recent research. Then Amy wrote a collection of original stories with decodable text for the program. In the following years, they added the writing piece and the ABC component. LEARN MORE
